The Bitcoin Diploma Story

There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come.
This story begins in El Salvador in 2022, when we launched the world’s first Bitcoin Diploma inside a public school system. We did not ask the government for permission. The school invited us, and 38 students graduated that June.

Some criticized us for bypassing official channels. When the first students crossed the stage, we announced expansion to a second school the next day.

A year later, the same government asked for help introducing bitcoin education. To protect our independence, we refused payment and instead trained hundreds of public-school teachers to run the program themselves.

In September 2022 we made the entire curriculum open source. What began as a local experiment quickly became a global movement.

Today the curriculum is updated twice a year and adapted by educators worldwide.
It now includes a one-hour introduction and a program for juniors.

In March 2023 we launched the Education Network, a global community built on shared principles: independent, impartial, community-led, bitcoin-only, high-quality education. Since then, educators have translated the curriculum and brought it to 41 countries across six continents.

Because the work is open source, many others teach it independently without our knowledge or permission.

The Bitcoin Diploma succeeds because it reflects what it teaches: empowerment through permissionless innovation. It grows through collaboration, not competition. Through impact, not profit.

Independent, community-led bitcoin education will change the world. It already has.

For a better world,

Foreword

The study of Bitcoin begins with a deeper question: what is money, and why does it matter?

Before exploring Bitcoin itself, it is important to understand the foundations on which it stands. Money has evolved over thousands of years, shaped by human cooperation, technological progress, and the changing needs of societies. From barter systems to precious metals, from paper currency to the digital financial networks we use today, each stage in this evolution tells a story about trust, power, and economic coordination.

By studying the history and structure of modern financial systems, we gain the perspective needed to understand why Bitcoin emerged and what problems it seeks to address. Bitcoin did not appear in a vacuum. It is a response to longstanding challenges within monetary systems, and an attempt to rethink how value can be stored and transferred in the digital age.

This diploma is designed to guide you through that journey step by step. As you progress, you will build the knowledge required to critically examine both the current financial system and the innovations introduced by Bitcoin.

Approach this learning process with curiosity and patience. The ideas explored here have the potential to reshape how we understand money, technology, and economic freedom. With a solid foundation, you will be well prepared to engage with one of the most important financial and technological developments of our time.
